Turning our way of life upside down

Posted by admin in environment on 09 27th, 2009

ermit of “Muppet Show” fame had no idea of the power and poignancy of his, “It’s not easy being green”, phrase.

Nowadays, it’s taken on new meaning as households and businesses alike have taken up the challenge of “green”.

Whilst some may argue about the raison d’etre for such a push, at the most basic level it’s just plain good sense in a business if you can create greater value using less resources.  And with respect to reducing our reliance on petroleum based energy sources it’s a matter of damn good sense.

In our personal lives it’s much the same.

The task of  is one of the most challenging to confront the modern day entrepreneur. Namely, it’s essential to keep a foot in both camps - conventional and green. To maintain cost structures that allows you to compete on price, to create genuine product with “green” attributes that are valued in the market place – and to make that very same product at a price that is competitive because the vast majority of businesses and consumers are NOT prepared to pay more.

There are examples out there where the seemingly impossible is being brought together to manufacture eco-friendly safety signs  at keenly competitive prices. Being “green” does incur some extra costs but those costs can easily be absorbed where you completely re-jig the manufacturing process using just in time and lean manufacturing processes.

Another example can be found with fridge magnets. This time, custom, made to order and used for promoting your organisations, message, logo, offer or latest idea, they tend to have the habit of hanging around for aeons.

So, using the latest in digital technology these magnets are being printed using solar electricity generated in situ. And other processes are being finished using brawn and muscle as lower impact solutions are rising to prominence.

It’s the Holy Grail of green - to be green and do it at a price point that is competitive with conventional product.  There are some out there that are doing this and there will be more and more as the sensibility sinks in of adapting manufacturing processes so they are of lower energy intensity – “greener”.

Using Grass Seed To Have The Best Lawn

Posted by admin in environment on 09 25th, 2009

Choosing the right kind of grass seed for the area that you live will save you a lot of trouble, especially when it comes to care and maintenance.

The first thing that you have to take into consideration is the type of climate that you are staying in. Then there is the type of soil that you wish to plant your lawn in. These are the things that will have an impact on how your lawn will grow. You need to be able to regulate the water, sun and shade.

You will also find some of the best grass seed ideas from one of these: bermuda grass seed types grass seed ratings best grass seeds for sandy soil

Initial preparation of planting your grass is clearing the ground. It is important to have this ground cleared of anything growing on it. The idea is to prevent your lawn being suffocated by weeds nor other types of grass as it grows. Clearing this ground effectively will also save you the time you spend on care and maintenance. You will know that once it has sprouted you just water and trim it that’s all.

It is very difficult for weeds to grow once your lawn is fully germinated. Fot those that are staying in the hot and dry climate then they might consider Buffalo grass, Centipede or Bermuda grass. Blue grass and Rye grass is more suited for those areas that have cool and moist conditions. A lawn requires lots of attention in its early stages of growth, later on its just routine work that needs to be done to it.

You will always find a tag or label attached to the seeds you buy, pay attention to the information on it. It provides information on the type of grass and the areas that will grow well in.

Reviews On Portable Solar Power Articles

Posted by admin in environment on 09 25th, 2009

A lot articles have been written on solar power, its benefits and its advantages. Contained in this article is just a summary of most of the information discussed about in most of them.

Below we cover the following topics: how does wind power produce electricity, How to Use Wind and Solar Power at Home and learn to install solar power systems

Quite a substantial number of articles have been published on solar energy. I will try and summarize the information contained in most portable solar power review articles. Yes it is possible to generate solar power on a small scale. As you probably are aware you can now set up your own solar panels from home and produce power for your home.

If you are searching for a system that is relatively small then it would be better to deal with a system that you have built on your own. This will ensure that you do not run into any problems each time you have to take it down and put it up again; since you already know how. What you need to be aware of is when you go for portability you sacrificing the output power you can produce.

The portable and smaller panels do not create as much power as the large ones do. Unless you construct a number of small portable panels that you will be able to connect and run simultaneously.

Most portable solar power review articles are compiled with the same data that’s why I have decided to summarize it for you here.

The advantage of small solar panels is the obvious convenience of being able to move around with them. You can also add on them. That is connect other panels and increase the outputenergy that you generate. But the size will depend on how much power you want and the term portable really also depends on an individuals perspective.

One can look at the panels that are being being used to provide power for big houses as small when compared to the industrial level. Most portable solar power review articles fail to differentiate between small scale production panels.  Why; because the idea is the same. What you should bear in mind is whichever system you have in mind you can build one for yourself and its very easy.

Better safety and saving the environment can go hand in hand

Posted by admin in environment on 09 21st, 2009

Corporate social responsibility which embraces paying attention to the broad needs of employees, customers, suppliers, the community and what ever, and whom ever demands attention, is seen as being a necessary goal for all organizations.

In the business community there’s an increased awareness of the benefits that can accumulate when caring for your employees, acting responsibly toward the environment and in general, being a good corporate citizen; whether you be a gargantuan global enterprise or the corner shop.

The use of workplace safety signs is to modify conduct so as to keep accidents out of work and to gain better workplace safety. There’s a simple sequence to follow; so you comprehend the workplace safety hazards, take action to reduce them and then change behaviours and erect signage to advise of whatever hazards remain.

Such health safety signs perform an important task by continually prompting those those at work of the correct actions and protection equipment they must follow. With an audit and the subsequent corrective actions, your proactive action contributes to lower accident rates at work.

A proactive workplace management understands how signs and safety are a smart choice.

Nowadays, it’s expected for a business to act in a non-polluting way, and in so doing, to be a good community player.  So companies are working proactively to understand the hazards and impacts associated with their activities. This can involve a myriad of actions, such as re-engineering processes, changing behaviours, modifying the supply chain, buying “green” and in its simplest form following the 4R’s of reduce, recycle, refuse, re-use.

There’s a long way and simple way to be green…by simply buying in green materials, consumable’s and so on.   If you can find the “green” suppliers, then it is by far and away the fast track to rapid results.

When it comes to being both “green” and safe, having eco-friendly safety signs gives you the best of both worlds – a safer workplace and the “knowing” that you’re acting in a better way for the environment .

With the greater demands on all organizations to “be green”, “green” safety signs are just a small step to “greening” the planet.

Are Ground Level Ozone Gases Endangering Your Health?

Posted by admin in environment on 09 20th, 2009

New research that may see you paying a greater amount of attention to the air we all breathe in has recently been published via the ‘The New England Journal of Medicine’.

It proved that long-term exposure to ground level ozone gases significantly increases the risk of dying from respiratory complications. The risk is more than 30% greater in the metro areas that have the highest ozone concentrations in comparison to those locations with the lowest concentrations of ozone gases.

450′000 people were followed across 96 metropolitan regions over an 18-year period. During this time, Riverside California was found to have the highest concentrations, whilst, at the other end of the scale, the San Francisco had the lowest.

Most often, cities in the northeast part of America had lesser concentrations than states in the west like California. Los Angeles had a 43% greater risk, while Washington DC came in at 27% and New York at 25%.

What the experts suggest you to do to manage the risk is to exercise or do physically demanding work in the early morning hours, or in the late afternoon so as to be out of the way for the sunniest, hottest part of the day, especially should you be living in one of the warmer climates. Having your windows closed when ozone levels are highest is also advised.

In general, educate yourself about the world you live in. Give serious consideration to limiting your exposure to a gas that experts are finding increasingly dangerous. This study isn’t conclusive on itself, yet it does give a strong indication that danger is all around us.

If you, or someone you love, suffer from breathing problems, you should find out the levels of ozone gases in the town or city in which they or you live. Though it might seem drastic to move to another area, it could literally result in prolonging yours or their life.

Next - just head on over to the Daily Health Bulletin for tips on avoiding ozone dangers, plus for a limited time get 5 free fantastic health reports. Click here for a video summary of this study - Long Term Ozone Danger.

Indoor Lighting with Solar Lights

Posted by admin in environment on 09 18th, 2009

When it comes to any form of solar energy, what automatically comes to ones mind are cost efficiency and convenience. That is why many homes in the US use solar powered equipment in their household as much as possible. Thanks to technological evolution, solar powered equipments take a central place in many people’s lives today. This led to the evolution of the usage of Indoor Solar Lights in many households and became a recommended method of electricity in areas with constant sunshine throughout the globe. Want to learn more about true renewable power?

Indoor solar lights not only help you save electricity, but it also help reduce the green house effect, helping the envitonment. According to statistics from the Energy Star website, if US households switch on to indoor solar lights, $600 million can be saved from energy costs, anually.

By switching to indoor solar lights, you can save a lot of hassle that you may otherwise go through with replaceable bulbs. You obviously need a solar panel system installed in your home in order to utilize indoor solar lights. Indoor Solar Lights can ideally be used in extra rooms such as the garage, storage room or even barns as there is no need for wiring and is extremely convenient. True renewable power is here!

Using Indoor Solar Lights for your entire home though is not recommended due to the unpredictable nature of sunlight within the vicinity. Another reason why indoor solar lights are not suitable for your household is because they are not as bright as electrically powered ones. There are instances where Indoor Solar Lights may not come on at all if the day had been a cloudy one and the solar panel system had not absorbed sufficient amounts of sunlight. Indoor solar lights are usually available for usage during both night and day because energy that gets accumulated during the day gets used up during the night. Although indoor solar lights are a good replacement for electrically powered lights, it is still not a total reliable solution. Therefore, indoor solar light should not be used in the entire house. Totally green energy for your home - are you ready?

Are Energy Saver Bulbs Hurting the Planet?

Posted by admin in environment on 09 17th, 2009

Maybe you are saving the world a little bit every time that you purchase one of those energy saver bulbs. They do use less energy, and they last longer, which means that there is less trash from throwing out old bulbs. But there is a hidden secret, a toxic killer which lurks within many of these bulbs. Mercury, 5 milligrams of it, about as much as the tip of a pencil, and it is killing the world.

Well, not really. But it doesn’t help. Every time you throw out one of those bulbs you are adding a toxic element to the environment, however it’s not very much. In fact many household items, such as old time thermostats and thermometers, use much higher amounts of the substance and we have been throwing them out for years. Also, by the very nature of electricity itself, power plants that burn fossil fuels release tons of mercury into the environment each year, so using less electricity can actually offset the mercury in the bulbs.

However the best thing you can do is to just recycle those bulbs and make sure that they never release their toxic innards into environment. The way to do this is to find a CFL recycling center in your neighborhood. Ace Hardware, Home Depot, and Ikea all accept these bulbs for recycling at any of their locations. Additionally, you can search for CFL recycling centers at earth911.org, which will list them by location and proximity to you.

However many people live in houses which are located too far from a recycling center to make this method of disposal efficient. They would end up using so much gas fueling the car to get to the center, that much of the energy saving, and especially the money saving value would be lost. These people have two options, find a for profit company that will accept CFL’s via mail, or save up your bulbs and take them back in bulk.

If your local community doesn’t offer CFL recycling services, then you may want to get creative. If you call your local garbage service, you can find out about CFL recycling guidelines. Call you local government, and write letters, asking that they institute some sort of program or reform. If you are truly passionate, contacting local news agencies will get some attention for your cause.

Honestly, all of this is a pain in the butt. People buy these spiral bulbs because it is an easy way to feel like your saving the environment, and it is a way to save money. Most people don;t care nearly enough to take the cause to the next level. I’m not sure that I will necessarily do any of these things. However your level of involvement is directly connected to your commitment to the cause, and those who do go to the next level are to be commended.

Classification of Stone and Rocks

Posted by admin in environment on 09 12th, 2009

David Artsmith  -  Rocks are classified by mineral and chemical composition, by the texture of the constituent particles and by the processes that formed them into igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. Particle size is also used in the case of conglomerates and breccias or in the case of individual stones. The transformation of one rock type to another is called the rock cycle.

We classify rocks and minerals in several different ways. These include the method of formation, the size and type of particles in a rock, and by the types of minerals or the chemical composition. This general typing consists of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Rocks such as breccias and conglomerates gain their designation from the particle size in their structures. Geology designates the change from one type of rock into another as the rock cycle.

Igneous rocks originate from molten materials, and consists of two different types. These are the volcanic rocks, also termed extrusive rocks, formed from magma that flows to the surface or from eruption ejected rocks like pumice and basalt. Plutonic rocks (intrusive rocks) form more slowly as magma cools within the Earth’s crust and forms crystals.

Rocks are called sedimentary when they are formed by sediment from clastic elements, from plant and other organic residue or from precipitation, or evaporites, compacted into rocks. This occurs near the surface and most sedimentary rocks form from mud, e.g. mudstone, shale, and siltstone. Sandstones are the next most common and finally there are the rocks derived from carbonate compounds, such as limestone and dolostone.

When rocks are subjected to higher pressures and temperatures than those at the surface and those from which they originally formed, they are designated as metamorphic rocks. Things must be extreme so that minerals are changed into different chemical structures, in ways that might be recrystalized.

Small differences separate the natural stone classes into subgroups that are largely arbitrary points on a spectrum. Many claim this produces too many names while others argue that subtle differences occur often and are significant enough to demand specific nomenclature.

Color

Sedimentary rocks like common red sandstones and limestones gain color from hematite or ferric oxide, others from carbonates. Yellow and brown rocks come from the presence of limonite and goethite, while black comes from manganese oxide, asphalt and other carbon substances in the sediment. Glauconite and chlorite produce greenish rocks while phosphate or fluorite content makes blue rocks.

Significance

Rocks play a significant power in shaping both human culture and human technology. Human beings have used stone for generations, and its use in building represents some of our oldest technology. Mining metal ore changed societies based on what was available and prehistoric time is divided into the Stone Age, the Bronze Age and the Iron Age. The use of dimensional stones in building, roads, and bridges is also important.
