Electric Cars To Cut Down On Carbon Emission
Posted by admin in environment on 04 28th, 2009The UK Government is trying to get Britain to cut down on carbon emissions over the next few years. In April 2009 they introduced a £5,000 incentive to potential buyers, encouraging them to purchase electrical cars and reduce their carbon footprint. To make this possible, they have also allocated £250 million towards promoting electric cars.
Transport and environmental groups highlighted the need for a plan to roll out this new initiative. Transport secretary Geoff Hoon commented that “Cutting road transport CO2 emissions is a key element to tackling climate change. “Less than 0.1% of the UK’s 26 million cars are electric, so there is a huge untapped potential to reduce emissions.”
The Government has put aside some money for the scheme which includes a whopping £20million worth of investment across the UK for electrical charging points for the cars. This new push for economical cars will also allow 200 motorists to trial the electric cars and give their feedback to the Government.
Although the alternative economical option of electrical cars for driving may sound attractive, there are several issues to consider across a large scale. For example, the car can only run 40 miles before it needs a re-charge. The car could take several hours to charge before it’s ready to go on the road again and the fact that they can be fairly small.
Other things to consider include cost, because even with the huge investment made by the Government to roll this out, the cost of an electrical car can still be quite high. The AA president Edmund King argues that although there is the potential to revolutionise the UKs transport system across the cities, the small announcements are not enough and something needs to be done on a larger scale.
It was also argued that there is no point having one country’s Government push for more economical transport because manufacturing works on a global scale not a local scale. Finally, although people may be moving towards a low-carbon lifestyle, it may not be before 2050 that there is a mass transport system consisting of electrical cars that can hopefully travel more than 40 miles before needing a recharge and be fit for city driving as well as long distance journeys.

Posted by admin in environment on 04 27th, 2009Go Green In your house - And Save Too
If you would like to go green in your house, and save a little money at the same time, it’s never been so simple. As the planet faces a doubtful future of global temperature rises, which is thought to be the results of us all burning traditional fules indiscriminately, we all have a duty to do the best we will to redress the balance. These are some crucial pointers that may help you get started… Your house is where you spend a large amount of your earnings, so it is smart to be spending it as efficiently as practicable. You can begin to go green in your house by insulating the house. Flat insulation, wall hole insulation, double or maybe triple glazing - it’ll all make an incredible difference. Yes, there’s an investment to think about, but you may save in the long run, and save a lot too. We all use too much water.
Go green in the home by cutting back as much as you can. We could all, collectively, save one bln gallons of water a year by changing our old flush toilet cisterns.
The old ones use 3 and a half gallons per flush and the new high-efficiency ones use just over one and a quarter gallon. It creates a gigantic difference! If you probably did only this to go green in the home you would save twenty thousand gallons of water each year, and pay a ton less in water bills. The standard light bulbs that most houses have are extraordinarily incompetent. Compact fluorescent light bulbs burn around five pc of the old bulbs and they last ten times longer. They may cost a little more to buy at first, but this is a clear way to go green in the home and save a bundle in the long game. But you can do even better, The new LED lights are virtually twice as efficient as even the compact fluorescent light bulbs, and they are going to last even longer too. Heat leaks out of a home in winter and into the house in summer. Better insulation all round is a way to go green in the home. Look at your flat, your wall cavities, your windows and your doors. Sort out all these and you can go green in the home and actually save too.
Home uses are a drain on energy. Are you aware that modern washing powders are so good that they do not truly need hot water? Your washing machine uses the majority of its energy heating the water, so wash your garments cold.
They will clean great whilst you go green in the home. You might imagine your dishwasher is also an energy drain, Unusually , it’s not. If it’s used by you completely filled it uses less resources than if you wash by hand. When you know these tiny tips, it’s simple to go green in the home!
Alternative Energy Resources
Posted by admin in environment on 04 26th, 2009Despite all the problems with fossil fuels, this plant is not without many other ways to produce power from what are termed ‘alternative energy’ sources. An example that can be sited is one that is driven by photovoltaic cells called the solar power which in time can get more advanced and affordable. Solar energy power can be used for electricity, heating, and making hot water plus solar energy produces no pollution, as its input comes completely from the sun’s rays. However, much more work still needs to be done in order for us to economically harness the sun’s energy. On problem still to be overcome is storage of the collected power for ‘night-time’ use and when there the sunshine is not at its best.
Usually for now, a large number of private investors as well as the government take pride and support in investing for the utilization of wind energy as an alternative energy source. These are huge windmills with two but more often three blades which harness the power of the wind to generate electricity for many communities. We have used windmills for a number of centuries but it is only recently that they have been converted to produce electricity on an industrial scale. Modern wind turbines are simply are more advanced variations on the old theme. Just like any other methods, using the wind energy has its own hitch such as having to worry what to utilize if ever the days are calm and still. Unsurprisingly, you cannot fully depend on wind energy during these times and this is where the electric company comes into action of powering your home or office.
Hydroelectric energy is available as a source of alternative energy, and it can generate a substantial amount of power. To generate electrical energy, turbines are turned by the downhill motion of water which its flow in response to gravity and that’s something essential that hydroelectric energy uses. As water is everywhere it has not generally been a problem finding locations where it can be employed. Having said that, building huge dams is very expensive, time consuming and there are other issues which usually make the whole process costly at the beginning. To utilise this power, the dams that are built are huge structures otherwise they will not be able to a) hold back the water and b) have enough water to run the turbines efficiently. Conservationists are starting to be worried about operating a dam as it not only requires a lot of labour building it to store and control water’s potential and kinetic energy but it can also be risky and complicated. If you are not in the need to supply the electrical needs of a city or an area with huge population, then building a dam for it is not that necessary. There are small run-of-river hydroelectric converters which are good for supplying neighbourhoods or an individual office or home.
When artesian waters just below the earth’s crust are heated, a naturally-occurring energy in the structure of geothermal energy can be produced which is more often than not the most underrated form of alternative energy that gains less of the gratitude and pride. The heat from the earth’s core gets taken up by the water. A number of different methods are used to harness this ‘free’ power which is drawn up into power plants. The purpose of drawing up the hot water is for the gathering of the steam. The Geysers, approximately 100 miles north of San Francisco, is probably the best-known of all geothermal power fields - it’s an example of a dry stream plant.
An Introduction To Solar Cooking
Posted by admin in environment on 04 24th, 2009Did you know you can cook entire meals without any electricity or gas? It’s true. If you have access to the sun then you can cook with it.
Cooking with the power of the sun is commonly referred to as solar cooking, and you don’t need expensive gadgets or equipment to do this successfully either. Solar cooking requires sunlight of course, a bit of time, a few everyday items, and a willingness to experiment.
In the most basic form, solar cooking can be done easily as long as you have decently strong sunlight for a few hours. The stronger your sunlight is of course, the easier your solar cooking will be. In the desert southwestern areas of the United States for example, you can literally just lay food out in direct sunlight in the summer and it will cook quickly for you. We’re going to look at a little more than the basics here though.
There are two primary ways to cook food with solar power. One is to use what’s known as a parabolic cooker, and the other is to simply use reflecters.
A parabolic cooker is actually just anything you have on hand which has a slighly bowled, or parabolic shape to it. Round satellite dishes are excellent examples of this type of inward curved surface. The slight curve of a surface like this will allow you to concentrate the natural heat of the sun onto the food you’re cooking.
Parabolic cookers can be made with simple cardboard, or any slightly concaved material such as an old (small) sattelite dish, a small wok, or even a bent and curved trash can or barbecue lid. Using old materials for this is great because it allows you to recycle and it doesn’t usually cost a thing.
Most people choose to make their first solar oven with cardboard because it’s readily available, easy to work with, and free.
The best parabolic solar cooker will have slanted sides though, not upright ones. A slant of about 60 degrees outwards is ideal. Once you find the object you plan to use for your solar cooking, then you simply cover it with tin foil, mylar, or mirrors. Mirrors can actually be dangerous because too much heat is generated, so it’s best to start with aluminum foil. Cover your concaved object with the foil so that the shiny side is facing out. This will capture more of the sunlight shining down on your solar cooking, and help focus it onto your food.
Simple reflector style solar cookers are another popular option, and in many cases you don’t even have to put things together to make this work. With this style of solar cooking, you simply put a pot or pan out into direct sunlight and surround it on three sides with reflective material to help direct the solar heat to your food.
With either solar cooking design though, you’ll want to use either glass or dark metal cooking pots and pans. Dark metal helps attract and absorb the natural solar heat from the sun, and glass allow that solar heat to pass through easily yet stay trapped inside for cooking.
Depending upon the strength of the sunlight you have available and the solar cooker design you’re using, it can take anywhere from one to three hours to fully cook common meals for three to five people.
Of course you can also use solar panels to power a more conventional energy efficient stove or oven when the sun isn’t strong enough to use your solar cooker, or if you prefer to cook foods in a more traditional manner.

New Oil Aspects 2009
Posted by admin in environment on 04 16th, 2009It’s Not All About The Oil - America Has Sustainable Power To Do What?
The world is in a frenzy, the oil crisis is making economies to cause a downturn that may even be greater than the great misery. The war as they say is the cause. The budget deficit owing to 2008 is now over $400,000,000. This money certainly would have been put to better reason within America itself.
Conspiracy Theory
Most persons will say that the president of the United States waged bloodshed smuggle a middle eastern country due to oil America after all is one of the world’s largest oil consumer. Everything in the US is automated, or electrical. To run machineries you use oil wares, to produce high demands of electricity you barrel and barrels of oil to tear the generators.
It is quite little to assume that the former President whose family business is oil has a vested absorption leadership acquiring a country in consequence well-heeled rule mineral deposits. First of all it will make oil sources available anytime they want astray having to worry with diplomacy and experience through another government. Sustain more free lunch thanks to the Bush family, because they have an oil trade if they answerability amuse geriatric fuel at market price then they entrust have massed earnings. The idea makes vein further could very much be possible.
Sustainable Power Treasure
Political and idiosyncratic factors is not the whole issue. There are other faces to this scenario. Yes, America is one of the world’s largest energy consumer, but America also has the largest preference of energy resources on Earth.
Geothermal, Hydro, Diddly again etc.
The United States of America is unmistakable due to the world’s greatest geothermal scene stimulation.
The Geysers located just north of San Francisco was the planet’s basic further largest wilderness steam occupation. The astonishing object about these power plants ( whereas there are several ) is that sewage waste from surrounding cities are pumped into the geothermal stabilize in order to cater the supply of steam needed owing to energy production. States allied thanks to Nevada, Oregon, Idaho, Arizona, Utah among others own their own geothermal plants.
Accurate the fourth tract with the largest hydropower capacity, the Americas revolutionized hydropower by roof plentiful dams in awfully calculated areas all over the US. Feasibly the largely received is the Hoover Dam. At the time sound was fully operational Hoover Dam was uttered to be the world’s largest electricity generating hydropower plant. Located on the cusp of Nevada and Arizona, the Hoover dam supplies electricity to the states of Nevada, Arizona and most of Southern California.
Quiver Port Missouri is a city in North America who is in truth powered by insignificancy farms. Of the 56 states effect America over half have wind farms which help supply their security needs. Some states may have aesthetical issues, but wind farms will definitely pass into indispensable magnetism in the future especially when the impact of dwindling oil supplies from the east is felt.
A Closing Scenario
The States have its own oil resources deserved within its backyard. Texas and just off shore from New Orleans a new sight is emerging. That of drilling areas, but one commodity remains clear. Fossil fuel as an energy source is not viable for human health and the future of our environment. If you’re still asking why the American government is waging war for oil? Perhaps it’s not oil after all. Maybe it’s just a peace crusade with a sword in hand.
There’s a lot to understand about oil. Some of the facts has been shown above, but there is still plenty more to reveal and develop.
Are You In Need For Safe Drinking Water?
Posted by admin in environment on 04 3rd, 2009There are many things in life that we consider to be essential. That new car or that new pair of shoes may seem essential but in reality they are not. Food, water and shelter are absolutely necessary for survival. Without water we would not exist. You would not get the chance to wear those new shoes or drive that new car. If you have ever traveled to another country, such as Mexico, then you have heard about the drinking water available there. It can not be just any water that you drink. It must be safe water that will not make you sick.
Drinking water has to be balanced. Run off from local farms that use pesticides, run off from animal livestock areas or run off from industrial parks can all have a direct bearing on source water. Should there be a contamination issue; the local public water office must issue a warning to citizens that a boil order is in effect. This means that all water, excluding bathing, must be boiled to ensure safety.
So how does the water that you drink become safe water? Well, it goes through water treatment plants and water purifiers to ensure that no microscopic bacteria are present that will cause you harm. Many cities and towns try to utilize biological purification systems before adding chemicals or other treatments to the water to ensure that you will not become sick by drinking the water. Water contamination is serious business, and in North America stringent water standards are the norm. Gastric problems can be quite serious for some individuals who already suffer from a lower immune system, such as the young or elderly.
No matter how many sodas you drink, drinking water is a must in your life. You need it to stay hydrated and performing at your best. If you drink enough water, then you can enjoy the benefits of a healthy system and great skin. When traveling, make sure and drink bottled water to keep that healthy glow from being dimmed by sickness. You cannot always trust that safe water will be available.
Useful Tips To Ensure Proper Environmental Protection
Posted by admin in environment on 04 2nd, 2009It is a sad fact but the United States is the number one garbage producing nation in the world. Australia comes in at second with 18 million tons of garbage but that does not compare to what the United States is generating. Sure, more people are recycling and are worried about environmental protection but it is not enough, with just a little over 1/4 of the people actively doing their part. The number of people putting recyclables into recycling bins for pick up and thus keeping them out of landfills is not enough.
In order to do your part, your garbage needs to be separated into the appropriate recycling waste bins. This means that you are going to need a bin for glass products, paper, aluminum cans and plastics. Doing your part for environmental protection means you will have to be conscientious about recycling no matter where you are; at home, at play and at work.
Many schools and work places are not part of a recycling program. However, if recycling bins were supplied and appropriately labeled for glass, aluminum cans, plastic and paper, then no doubt people would join in the recycling movement and place their garbage in the appropriate containers. Have your employer send out a memo asking them to do so. Lead by example and always do your part. If others see your commitment, then they will likely follow suit.
Make sure you buy recycled goods. This helps recycling industries know that there are people out there who are concerned with the environment. Many of our day-to-day products can be purchased that contain recycled materials. You can buy notebook paper made from recycled paper goods. Many detergent and household cleaning products come in bottles made from recycled plastics. By taking this small step into consumerism you can help further the cause and still have the items you need for your home.
There may not be a way to change the fact that the United States produces the most garbage of any country in the world. But considering that only thirty-five percent of the garbage is being recycled leaves a lot of room for improvement. Those numbers take time to change. Those numbers can and will go up eventually if environmental protection becomes something that everyone is aware of and doing their part to rectify. It may start with one home but it has to spread in order for it to be effective in keeping recyclables out of our landfills.
